A business security brief

Separating the purpose of an assignment from assumptions about the service it needs.

Boston, Massachusetts urban landscape

Describe the setting

Explain the type of workplace and the reason for considering a security service. A business contact, a building manager and an event organiser may each have different responsibilities. Establish which perspective the brief represents.

Define the relationship

Consider the interaction expected with employees, visitors and contractors. Courtesy and clarity are part of the service discussion. An officer’s role should be agreed rather than assumed from a uniform or job title.

Ask before assuming

Confirm availability, responsibilities and terms directly with the company. Do not publish access details or internal vulnerabilities in order to get an initial response. A concise, general brief is a better starting point.

A general brief is the right place to begin.
